After the completion of the High Line park and the grassy area in front of Lincoln Center, the New York office Diller Scofidio + Renfro was presented with another opportunity to shape a vast urban space. Together with the Scottish office Keppie Design and the Philadelphia landscape studio OLIN, they succeeded in winning the 'Granite Web' design for a new park over the railway cover between Denburn Road and Belmont Street in an international competition in Aberdeen, Scotland. In the final round, they managed to beat the proposal by the London studio Foster and Partners. Among other participants in the competition organized by the Aberdeen City Garden Trust were several significant studios such as Mecanoo, West8, and Snøhetta.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro decided to approach the park in grand style, incorporating a museum and arts center into the undulating landscape. They were inspired by children's play with threads: paths are tightly stretched across the six-hectare park, creating a network pattern. Communication nodes are formed by suspended roofs, pedestrian bridges, or squares with water features. The park contains two centers that seamlessly transition from the landscape into the structure of an underground visitor center and a natural amphitheater. The imaginative forms of the park structure play with the topography of the landscape—cutting, bending, and terracing, thus expanding the possibilities for the park's future use.
