Sports hall in Haiming by Almannai Fischer

In the Lower Bavarian village of Haiming, a new sports hall reminiscent of a traditional barn has been created according to the project by the Munich studio Almannai Fischer Architekten. The wood-clad structure is set in the border natural reserve at the confluence of the Salice and Inn rivers. However, since the 1950s, the village's idyllic atmosphere has been disrupted by the factory chimneys of the local chemical plant and a long-distance oil pipeline. The new sports hall had to cope with this duality, as well as connect to the existing building of the school gymnasium, which is now used as a multipurpose hall and space for gymnastics education.
From the outside, the building appears like a village barn. Inside, however, it meets all the requirements for a modern sports facility. While the building maintains a reserved demeanor, the recurring facade elements are unmistakable and easily memorable. Despite its simplicity, the structure conveys an unconsciously welcoming atmosphere. The authors were limited in their implementation by a very low budget. The wood used for the construction comes from local sources. To ensure that the structure did not exceed the height of the existing gymnasium, the sports area was sunk one meter below the surrounding terrain. Operational rooms are attached to the side of the sports hall and easily distinguishable from the outside. Polycarbonate panels light up the northern facade. The southern facade facing the outdoor sports area is illuminated by a longitudinal band of windows with the option for natural ventilation. The hall, made from prefabricated wooden components, leaves the white-painted structure exposed, which, in addition to pragmatic reasons, contributes to the staging of the interior space and the final play with filigree elements.
