Sydney – The Australian city of Sydney today celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of the famous Opera House, which has become one of the masterpieces of world architecture of the 20th century and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. At dusk, crowds gathered along the waterfront to watch a laser show on the facade of the building, which resembles the sails of a giant sailboat.

The Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who won the competition in 1956 against 232 other candidates. The building was officially opened by British Queen Elizabeth II on October 20, 1973. The Opera is visited by around 11 million people each year.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wished the Opera a happy birthday on the social network X. "A symbol known around the world and a treasure of our country is celebrating 50 years," Albanese wrote.

After today's laser show, prepared by Australian audiovisual artist Robin Fox, more events will follow over the weekend, including free tours, which Reuters expects will draw around 37,000 visitors.
