The new IJburg polder serves not only as a residential area for tens of thousands of Dutch commuting to nearby Amsterdam for work but is also a self-sufficient urban district offering twelve thousand jobs, schools, shops, restaurants, and even its own cemetery. In addition, IJburg offers a range of sports activities. The local tennis club, located on the small island of Rieteland-Oost between the densely populated island of Haveneiland and the natural park Diemerpark, was founded in 2008. However, until now, tennis players have had to get by without adequate facilities. Two years ago, the Rotterdam studio MVRDV designed a clubhouse with a rooftop stand, aptly named “Sofa.” The red-hued, sculpturally designed object resonates with the tennis courts. The clubhouse measures 36 meters in length. Generous glazing opens views from the clay courts to the natural park. The stand is accessed from the southern side and provides seating for a total of two hundred spectators. The shaping of the roof also helps ensure that the clubhouse does not overheat during the summer months. In addition to the rooftop terrace and clubhouse, it offers the necessary facilities with changing rooms, showers, toilets, and storage. While the object shines brightly in red from the outside, the interior features wooden floors and ceilings, creating the impression of a living room.
