Kladno - A project called Urban Interventions is launching in Kladno, where architects will design proposals free of charge on how to improve neglected public spaces in the city. Residents can now send in suggestions for places that should be improved. The architects will then prepare projects, organize an exhibition, and publish a catalog with a reservoir of proposals that can be used to enhance the spaces. This was stated to journalists today by architect and representative of the civic association KLADN-ON/OFF Ondřej Rys.
The Urban Interventions project originated five years ago in Bratislava. In the Czech Republic, a similar event has been held so far in Brno, Prague, and Jablonec nad Nisou.
Proposals can relate to intersections, parking lots, parks, monuments, dangerous locations, or industrial sites. People can submit suggestions to the architects until June 10, either by pinning a note on a map at the Central Bohemian Scientific Library or by picking up a sticker to place directly on the neglected site and informing the organizers about it.
According to Rys, a discussion will then take place, and locations will be selected for which architects will start working on improvements over the summer. The exhibition of prepared projects and the publication of a catalog, which the city might use to modify public spaces, is planned for October.
"The goal of the project is to encourage architects to come up with ideas that can be implemented simply and with minimal resources," Rys stated. During the first similar domestic event in Prague, according to him, architects devised around 80 proposals, which later resulted in, for example, a picnic meadow near the National Theatre or a non-level intersection at Malovanka, where there will be an exit from the Strahov Tunnel and an entrance to the new Blanka Tunnel. Over 100 proposals were collected during the Urban Interventions in Brno.
Rys would like to connect the end of the pedestrian zone with Svobody Square, which are currently separated by a large intersection. "I think that is a mistake, and the solution is not complicated," Rys noted. Mayor Dan Jiránek (ODS) expressed that he likes the architects' idea regarding Urban Interventions. He did not rule out the possibility that the city could utilize some of the proposals. "Thanks to the involvement of not only the professional public and the creation of a broader debate, it will be easier to guide the development of the city and address some of its ailments," Jiránek added.
