The two-round architectural and urban planning competition for the redevelopment of the bus station area has been announced by the city of Kladno in recent days. Architects are thus given the opportunity to propose how to manage the improperly utilized space of the current bus station, improve comfort for passengers, and revitalize part of Kladno's center. During the first round of the competition, participants will address the broader context of the bus station, which includes the entire city block, comprising historical villas and urban houses as well as a supermarket building. The challenging terrain conditions and the capacity of traffic routes bordering the city center pose a challenge for the participants. “We want the new bus terminal to start serving passengers in 2018. The terminal will enable easy transfers between long-distance and local bus transport and will also offer a capacious P+R parking lot, bike storage, and other services for passengers,” says Ondřej Rys (Volba pro Kladno), chairman of the city development committee. The area in question serves as a border between the historical center of Kladno and the brownfield site of the Vojtěšská ironworks, directly connecting to a pedestrian zone, the reconstruction of which the city is also preparing. Its new form is currently the subject of an architectural competition that is concluding. The competition jury consists of prominent experts from various professions, including transport and economics specialists in addition to architects and urban planners. The task for the participants is to take into account all the requirements placed on a modern transport terminal and a functioning urban center, so that their proposal ranks among the 3-8 best that will advance to the second round of the competition. The deadline for submission of proposals in the first round of the competition is June 14, 2016, and the final results will be announced by the organizers at the end of this August. The selected proposal for the area will also serve as a basis for the regulatory plan of the city center. Detailed information about the competition and complete competition documents have been published on Kladno's website. A total amount of CZK 1,315,000 will be distributed among the competitors.
