Bohumín (Karviná) - The costs for the reconstruction of Freedom Square in Old Bohumín, the oldest municipal part of Bohumín in the Karviná region, are estimated at 20 to 30 million crowns. The town hall, in cooperation with architects and heritage experts, is preparing the project documentation, and officials have now presented the first visualizations to representatives of the culture commissions and Old Bohumín. This was reported by Bohumín spokesperson Lucie Balcarová. It is currently unknown when the reconstruction of the square in the historic center might begin.

Jitka Ptošková, head of the investment and development department, stated that the reconstruction will include the renewal of surfaces, the establishment of a relaxation zone, parking spaces, and a flower bed. The Memorial to the Fallen and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk will remain in their places, and a water feature may be added. "Some want a fountain, others a period pump, and some prefer nothing and wish to use the money differently. When considering a water feature, we have to take into account not only its appearance but also practical maintenance and technological background," Ptošková stated.
Balcarová mentioned that the architects presented two types of models and a total of five variants of a water feature with a motif of the Odra River and local meanders. "The first, narrower type has a rectangular shape; the water feature would be roughly the same length as the current fence around the Memorial to the Fallen and would be only a few meters away from it. The second type of the feature is broader and captures a miniature version of the meanders in its full length and width," described the spokesperson.
Bohumín mayor Petr Vícha stated in a press release that he does not expect the square to be reconstructed in the next two years. "Although due to the economic crisis we have been receiving taxes 30 million lower for the third consecutive year and we prefer not to engage in large investments without subsidies, we are trying to work on projects and building permits so that after the crisis and in case of subsidy titles, we will be well prepared," he said.
