Brno Hotel Avion awaits renovation by Jiřičná

Brno - The functionalist Hotel Avion in the center of Brno wants its owner Stanislav Berousek to start renovations this year. The hotel, designed by architect Bohuslav Fuchs in the 1920s, should be restored to more closely reflect its original spirit while also achieving the standards of modern hotel services, including bathroom facilities in each room. The owner is collaborating on the reconstruction with architect Eva Jiřičná of Czech origin. The building will carry her signature, the owner told reporters today.
    According to Berousek, the hotel should function more like it did shortly after its completion after the renovation. A self-service dining room is to be created on the ground floor, following the buffet that was located there until the 1980s. The owner will establish a restaurant on the first floor, newly accessible by elevator, and on the second floor a café and wine bar.
    The redesign of the eighth floor will pay tribute to the architect. The current terrace, which is unused and can only serve as a restaurant garden in nice weather, will be enclosed, allowing it to be utilized year-round. "The café will be named Eva, according to Ms. Jiřičná," said hotel director Martina Hoskovcová.
    According to the owner, Jiřičná applied for the hotel renovation project herself. Directly contacting architects did not lead to an agreement, so Berousek published the plan for renovation on the Archiweb website. "Many architects from abroad responded, and I was particularly interested in Ms. Eva," he said.
    The owner plans to start the renovation in September, estimating costs in the tens of millions of crowns. He did not want to disclose the exact amount due to the bidding processes he is preparing. He hopes to open the hotel in its renovated form next year but added that deadlines have always been pushed back so far. The rebuilt Avion is expected to be equipped similarly to four-star hotels, but according to Berousek, it will not carry any stars. "We want to be a Design Hotel," he stated.
