Brno - At the Avion hotel in Brno, people can view last year's best works of Czech designers, fashion creators, and other artists starting Wednesday. Objects for which their creators received the Czech Grand Design 2008 awards are displayed in the functionalist landmark. The panels with photographs were already shown in Prague. However, in Brno, as the second exhibition venue, they managed to showcase them in an interesting space, said Rostislav Koryčánek on behalf of the organizers today. According to Koryčánek, the organizing House of Art of the City of Brno had been looking for suitable spaces for the exhibition for a long time. It was not possible to hold it in its parent building because it is under renovation and is closed. "We are suffering from a lack of space, and for this reason, we were looking for an alternative," he stated. The art house staff initially considered the Jalta passage, which belongs to the city and is unused. However, they did not reach an agreement with the city hall. On the other hand, the owner of the Avion hotel, Stanislav Berousek, was accommodating to the idea of hosting the design exhibition. According to Koryčánek, the spaces of the functionalist building, which was created in the 1920s based on the design of architect Bohuslav Fuchs, are exceptionally suitable for the exhibition. "As I walked through here, the space was absolutely captivating," Koryčánek said. Even before the exhibition, the hotelier had all built-in furniture and carpets removed from the 2nd and 3rd floors, so the panels with photographs are the only objects in the space. The hotel will also be undergoing reconstruction this year. The Academy of Design of the Czech Republic selected the best works of designers and other creators for the third time this year. The jurors, curators, theorists, and journalists chose Jan Čtvrtník as the winner for his vases and seating furniture collection.
