Brno - Brno plans to build a complex of three buildings with 85 apartments on French Street. They will serve as starter flats for young families or seniors, said Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), the deputy mayor, to ČTK. According to him, the construction costs are estimated at around 130 million crowns. There are currently unused buildings in place. Work could begin next year and end in 2020.
The city council approved the plan for construction and the organization of an architectural-urban design competition. The competition is to be completed this autumn. The complex will be located in the inner block of French, Hvězdova, Bratislavská, and Stará streets. "We already have a study done with around 85 housing units planned. We estimate the investment at 130 million, but we will know exactly how much the realization will cost after the design is completed," Hladík stated. The project will be funded from the housing construction fund, where the city has money from the sale of properties and rents.
Whoever wins the competition will be able to design, said the deputy mayor. "By the end of next year, we will be ready to start. It could be ready by spring 2020. Currently, there are structures in the area that once served as educational or recreational facilities. Some ground-level buildings will also need to be demolished," he added.
According to him, there will also be space for a community center in the buildings. "The Brno-sever and Brno-střed districts are interested in this because in the entire stretch between Milady Horákové Street, Cejl, and on one side almost up to the small city ring and on the other side to Jugoslávská Street, there is no adequate infrastructure in terms of public amenities. There are no recreational activities, no children's playground. Therefore, part of the project is the creation of this infrastructure, including a large children's playground," said Hladík.
Brno manages nearly 30,000 apartments. Most are administered by city districts, of which there are 29 in Brno.
