Brno - Brno will have an extraordinary council meeting next week regarding the construction of a new train station by the river for tens of billions. The mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) told reporters today. The Ministry of Transport does not plan for the simultaneous construction of an underground railway similar to a metro, which should ensure the transport of passengers in public transport. The so-called diameter was, however, a condition set by the city. The city wants to appeal to the government to reject the ministry's decision and build the diameter alongside the station.
The proposal to appeal to the government was brought up at today's council by the mayor's deputy Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno). CTK reported that it was postponed and will wait until the mayor of Brno, Petr Vokřál (ANO), returns from vacation. "We discussed it at today's council, but the material was withdrawn. We agreed with colleagues that next Tuesday, after the mayor returns from vacation, we will convene an extraordinary council to address this," Hladík stated at a press conference. According to him, it is necessary to clarify the text that the city will send to the Ministry of Transport and the government.
The current train station in Brno is already insufficient in capacity. Talk of building a new one has been ongoing for 90 years. Decisions were made about constructing it in the city center under Petrov near the current station, or relocating it about a kilometer to the Svratka River. Both the South Moravian Region and Brno, along with some experts, supported the relocation to the river, conditional on the construction of the diameter. Citizens, on the other hand, prefer a station under Petrov, as expressed in two referendums. However, due to low participation, neither was valid.
Both Hollan and Hladík warn that without the underground railway, the relocated station will not be adequately serviced. Politicians highlight that the diameter would also be necessary for the second option, as the current capacity of trams is at maximum.
Today, Transport Minister Dan Ťok (ANO) presented an informative material to the government about the relocation without the diameter, and the government acknowledged it. Ťok is to prepare a detailed analysis of the project's financing by the end of the summer. The relocation is expected to cost over 40 billion crowns, with another two billion earmarked for urban infrastructure. In the future, another 20 billion is planned for high-speed railways. The diameter is also estimated to cost billions of crowns, sometimes up to 20 billion.
