Brno - The coalition movement Žít Brno will propose to the city council on Tuesday to urge the government to reject the Ministry of Transport's approach regarding the construction of a new train station in Brno for tens of billions. The city council approved this year that the station should be relocated to the river, but the condition is the construction of an underground railway similar to the metro, which would ensure the serviceability of public transport. According to the Mayor's Deputy Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno), the ministry will present a document to the government on Tuesday in which it did not accept the condition of the so-called diameter.
The construction of a new station has been discussed in Brno for almost a hundred years. The current station is insufficient in capacity. Two locations were considered: one in the center under Petrov, a short distance from the current station, or a relocation of less than a kilometer to the river. Two referendums were even held, but they were invalid due to low turnout. However, the majority of people voted for keeping the station in the center. Nevertheless, the councils of the region and the city decided on the relocation, with the condition that an underground railway similar to the metro would be built.
"A document is to be presented to the government on Tuesday indicating that the Ministry of Transport did not accept the city's condition for the construction of the diameter. It is only supposed to prepare a technical solution to allow for the realization of the diameter. This means it would not have to be built simultaneously with the station, but it could potentially be built at some point in the future," said Hollan.
If a station is to be created without an underground railway, public transport will not function, according to Hollan. "For the city, the relocation would be undesirable and would damage transport. People would have to walk because not everyone could fit into those trams," Hollan stated. Currently, trams run very frequently from the station, and there is a large tram hub in front of the station. The new station is expected to further increase capacity, plus trams will bypass important intersections on the way to the center.
Therefore, Hollan will propose to the Brno council to urge the government to reject the Ministry of Transport's approach and for the diameter to become an integral part of the station's modernization. He also emphasized the importance of resolving the complications that the connection of freight and passenger rail transport will bring at the new station. Currently, both are separate, but they would need to connect into one passage, which according to Hollan would cause capacity problems. "No study has addressed this issue so far; the freight transport has been forgotten," added Hollan.
