Brno - Brno will commission a study to consider the possibilities for building Park&Ride type parking lots on the outskirts of the city, from which drivers can then continue into the center using public transportation. In selected locations, the study must check whether it is possible to resolve property rights and whether it is possible to transfer to public transport within walking distance, said Deputy Mayor Richard Mrázek (ANO) to reporters. The city has identified 12 locations where parking lots are possible, and the study will determine which of them are actually suitable. The previous city leadership only addressed this matter superficially and commissioned an investment proposal for a parking lot in the area of the current car dealership at the intersection of Olomoucká and Ostravská streets. "We have also included this location in our plans, but it is complicated here due to the zoning plan," Mrázek said. The selected locations are where key traffic flows head towards Brno. For example, in Komárov and near Vídeňská street, where cars arrive from the D2 and R52 highways, in Královo Pole, where traffic comes from the north. One of the locations is also the Bohunice campus area, which the city will connect with a tram line in the future. "At the same time, we want the parking lots to be flexible, meaning that the capacity can be increased or decreased based on demand," Mrázek stated. The study is to be completed by the end of this year, after which the city will begin preparing individual projects and will divide the construction of parking lots into phases. It aims to draw funds from European funds designated for these projects. P&R parking lots are one of the tools large cities use to reduce car traffic in the center, typically located near metro stations or train stations, from where drivers continue their journey by public transport.
