Cheb - The Cheb city council approved the call for an urban planning and architectural study on the use of the former barracks on Zlatý vrch. The two-round competition should yield a solution for the area, which serves as an entry point to other development sites in the city, said Deputy Mayor Tomáš Linda (ODS) to reporters today.

"We decided on a two-round competition. In the first round, applicants will propose an urban planning solution, and a committee composed of experts will then select four proposals, which the authors will then develop into an architectural study," described Linda.
The city has been waiting for ten years for the use of the area. The non-commercial use block lasted so long as it was part of the agreement on the transfer of former military property to the city. "The block expired this year," stated Cheb Mayor Pavel Vanoušek (ČSSD).
This opens up access to a new part of the city for Cheb. While Cheb has so far developed mainly to the south, with the western part lying fallow, access through the former barracks will enable the use of Špitální vrch up to the Skalka dam.
"We want the city to develop similarly to how it did in the past, expanding from the center outward. The use of land behind the barracks would also allow for the connection of main roads around the entire city in the future," described Linda.
According to the city's zoning plan, which is nearing completion, the Zlatý vrch area is designated for mixed-use development. Given its southern orientation, it is ideal for residential construction as well as civic amenities. However, the critical aspect is mainly the road connection to the center to the lands behind the area.
