Cheb - Atelier A69 - architects s.r.o. won the urban planning and architectural competition for the future design of the Zlatý vrch and Špitálský vrch barracks in Cheb. The winning proposal suggests the construction of a residential neighborhood on the site of the former barracks with ample greenery and a natural amphitheater in the space of the former shooting range, Mayor Pavel Vanoušek (ČSSD) told journalists today. Thirteen architectural teams participated in the competition.
"This was the first time Cheb used an architectural competition to obtain proposals for the future form of part of the city. Although the competition was anonymous, the winning design demonstrated that the creators have a good knowledge of the site," said Vanoušek. Atelier A69 originally comes from Františkovy Lázně and has already created several studies for Cheb. Among other things, according to the architects' proposal from A69, the pedestrian zone in Cheb was also modified.
According to the winning proposal, only two of the original extensive barrack buildings should remain. In addition to apartment and family houses, a facility with caretaker services should be built on the site. "The decision to significantly reduce the barracks area is pragmatic and increases the likelihood of implementing public investments," said one of the jury members, architect Michal Fišer.
According to Vanoušek, the city will now have the winners refine the proposal into the form of a land-use study, which will serve as the basis for updating the land-use plan. The locality is significant for Cheb not only because it is one of the few unused areas near the center, but it also unveils access to Špitálský vrch, which is a future development area for the city. In the past, the city typically expanded in circles around the historical center. Utilizing Špitálský vrch would again complement the existing distribution of the city into a circle.
