Český Krumlov – Český Krumlov started today the repair of the heritage-protected stone bridge over the stream Polečnice in Staré Dobrkovice. The bridge from the mid-19th century will have a new supporting structure. The repair, costing 3.5 million Czech crowns, will last until the end of October. The bridge is on an actively used pedestrian and cycling path, with a temporary route leading along the adjacent footbridge. This was announced today by city spokesperson Petra Nestávalová.
The 19th-century bridge is on the original main road from Český Krumlov to Kájov. Due to its architecture, it is classified as a cultural monument. Workers had previously repaired its lower part, and now work has started on the upper part. "The supporting structure consists of arches made of stone masonry, where areas with loose stones will be repaired. A reinforced concrete reinforcing slab will be added to the reverse side of the arches. Reinforced concrete transition slabs will be built to ensure a gradual transition from the bridge to the connecting bike path," stated Mayor Dalibor Carda (SN-City for All) in a press release.
The non-original concrete parapets will disappear. Instead, the company K-Building CB will build new walls made of natural gathered stone and granite slabs. It will also add railings similar to those in the historic part of Krumlov. "The stone vaulted three-arch bridge is an important source for documenting the development of this type of construction in the South Bohemian region," stated the spokesperson.
Last May, the city completed the repair of the heritage-protected Rechle footbridge from the 18th century, whose shingle roof was in a state of emergency. The work cost two million crowns. Last year, Český Krumlov reconstructed a temporary bridge near the brewery, which was in a state of emergency and had not allowed heavier vehicles to cross since the summer of 2019. The bridge is the only way for these vehicles to enter the historic core of the city. The city hall also intends to repair the Lazebnický bridge, which has been affected by wood-destroying fungi. This bridge is a cultural monument and connects the center of the city with the castle.
