Znojmo - The southern wing of the neglected Znojmo monastery in Louka will receive new windows, a total of thirty-five. The investment will amount to 2.3 million crowns, of which one million will come from a grant from the Ministry of Culture through the Architectural Heritage Rescue Program. This was stated today in a press release by the spokesperson of Znojmo City Hall, Zuzana Pastrňáková.

"Through gradual steps, we are trying to revive the Louka monastery complex, which is why we decided to invest additional funds into the necessary restoration of the windows,"
said the mayor of Znojmo, Vlastimil Gabrhel (ČSSD).

The plan is to produce a total of five types of windows made of solid larch with a coating in the color of ivory. They will be handmade replicas of historical windows, the appearance of which has been approved by heritage protectors. It should be completed by the end of September.

The former Premonstratensian monastery is one of the Znojmo landmarks, but it is significantly neglected. The city is gradually repairing the large complex, which it obtained free of charge from the state six years ago. Usually, however, these are solutions to emergency conditions.

Previously, the former riding hall was completely reconstructed, and another investment was repairs to the façade of the former stable. Part of the complex is used by the winery company Znovín Znojmo.

The monastery was established in the early Middle Ages when it was founded in 1190 by the Czech prince Conrad II Otto and his mother, Marie. During the Hussite Wars, it was plundered by troops, underwent a massive reconstruction in the 18th century, but it was not completed. The monastery was abolished in 1784 by the reforms of Emperor Joseph II. After that, it housed a tobacco processing factory, a military academy, and then served as barracks until 1993.
