Dobrovíz (near Prague) - Today marks the official start of the construction of an Amazon warehouse in Dobrovíz. The hall, which will employ about 1,500 people, is expected to be completed by June next year at the latest. The laying of the foundation stone will be attended by Minister of Industry and Trade Jan Mládek and Amazon's head for the Europe region, Tim Collins. In these days, work on the foundation of the hall is commencing. By the end of the year, at least half of the hall, which will cover an area of 95,000 square meters, should have a roof and facade. Groundwork for preparing the construction site began in Dobrovíz in July. The first part of the hall is expected to be completed around Christmas. The building, measuring approximately 500 by 190 meters, is expected to take about seven months and will be divided into three phases. It will also depend on the weather conditions in winter. The developer signed cooperation agreements with the municipality of Dobrovíz and the local civic association in June. Locals will receive various benefits, such as half a million crowns annually for children and seniors, noise barriers, and safer roads. The contract between the municipality and the developer contains commitments from the developer, such as the construction of a bypass by the end of 2015 at the latest, modernization of the municipal wastewater treatment plant, and an annual contribution of one million crowns to the municipality. The total investments amount to 100 million crowns. A similar distribution center as in Prague was also planned in Brno in the Černovická terasa industrial zone. Brno city councilors approved an update of the zoning plan on May 20, thus allowing the construction of the center after long disputes on the matter. However, Amazon stated back in April that it no longer wants to build in Brno and is considering other locations in Central and Eastern Europe. Amazon is the largest and one of the oldest online retailers in the world. Jeff Bezos founded the company in 1994 and continues to lead it. Amazon started its online operations in July 1995 and now employs 97,000 people worldwide.
