Brno - The South Moravian regional office has issued a favorable opinion for the construction of a warehouse for the American company Amazon in the Černovická terasa industrial zone in Brno. It took into account the comments from local municipal districts, organizations, and individuals who expressed their views on the project last year, according to information from the EIA Information System. The city leadership aims to unify opinions and then send a clear stance to Amazon, Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) said at a press conference today. Developer CTP Invest has not definitively ruled out Amazon's arrival, and Amazon has vaguely stated since last summer that it is looking for a location in Central Europe and has said neither yes nor no about Brno. "We will negotiate with Amazon once we clarify our opinions within the coalition. Agreement should also extend across the political spectrum," Vokřál said, emphasizing that a repeat of the embarrassment at the municipal assembly like last year must not occur. "The city must be trustworthy for investors," he added. It remains clear that the vacant space will be occupied by the online retailer Amazon, or possibly smaller investors with a different focus. For this reason, the city is pressuring the Directorate of Roads and Highways (ŘSD) to expedite the construction of an access road directly into the industrial zone as much as possible. This will significantly alleviate the overloaded traffic in Slatina. By spring, the ŘSD should obtain the territorial decision. According to Vokřál, the current situation is long-term unsustainable, and even companies already operating in Černovická terasa are inquiring about the new access. If CTP eventually builds a warehouse for Amazon, it must adhere to dozens of conditions that the regional office incorporated into its favorable opinion. People opposing the proposal are particularly concerned about increased noise and pollutants in the air due to a significant increase in traffic. Key conditions include measures to shield the housing project Slatina - Green City from the railway track and the giant warehouse, and to minimize traffic in Slatina and Tuřany as much as possible. The number of cars in the affected city districts, which is already enormous, is expected to be significantly reduced only by the new highway exit. Amazon would burden the surrounding traffic with hundreds of employees' cars and, according to the assessment, up to 360 freight trucks per day. The Americans promised at least 1,500 jobs. They temporarily abandoned their intentions in Brno when the city council was unable to reach an agreement on whether Amazon wanted to be in Brno or not. Only after Amazon lost interest did the council members approve the possibility of building a warehouse and changing the zoning plan, which originally prohibited warehouses in the industrial zone.
