Brno – The largest development project carried out by the Brno City Hall in recent years has received a construction approval. The construction of two apartment buildings on Vojtova Street cost over 530 million crowns. The buildings offer 68 apartments with care services and 30 so-called starter apartments intended for young families and young couples. The city organized a tour of the apartments for journalists today.
Architects Martin Rudiš and Martin Komárek designed the buildings in a way that allows their residents to get to know each other. "Conditions for this have been specifically created within the exterior common spaces of the building. The project is based on independent households and a shared space in the form of atriums with horizontal and vertical gardens, footbridges, and galleries, which encourage various free activities and gatherings with friends through their space, equipment, and formal design,” said architect Martin Rudiš.
In addition to the apartments with care services and starter apartments, the building also has 14 barrier-free apartments, two with social services, and two caretaker apartments. On the ground floor of the buildings, there will be the Care Service, a cultural and educational center, a branch of the Jiří Mahen Library, as well as a café. The buildings also include a publicly accessible park with a fitness park, a multipurpose playground, and public restrooms.
Today, officials from the housing department held a lottery at the Brno New Town Hall to select the first tenants for the 30 starter apartments. A total of lease agreements for 50 apartments were drawn. People up to 35 years old and with a household net income of up to 58,000 crowns per month could apply for the lottery. There were 300 applications submitted for the lottery for 50 mostly small apartments, with 274 meeting the conditions.
The lottery itself, which Brno councilor for housing Jiří Oliva (ČSSD) publicly broadcasted on Facebook, lasted several hours. Officials placed numbers into envelopes in front of the camera and gradually drew one tenant with the right to sign a lease agreement and two substitutes for each apartment.
Brno currently has 120 starter apartments available; just last year there were only 65 apartments. The contract is concluded for three years with the possibility of extending it for two years.
