Prague - World experts in architecture and urbanism will bring solutions to Prague on how European cities can cope with the influx of new residents. Eight hundred participants of the fifth edition of the reSITE festival will engage in a game, where they will think together about the city and come up with affordable housing and design for sustainable and resilient cities. The main theme is migration, which includes not only refugees but also the young generation wishing to live in the city. The two-day festival will begin this Thursday at the Forum building in Karlín.
With this year's theme choice, the festival organizers aim to shift the focus from national borders to cities, which have been natural centers of human migration for millennia.
The organizers have invited world experts from among architects, urban planners, city representatives, investors, developers, university educators, and social activists. Germany will be the most represented country. One of the main lectures will be given by Martin Rein-Cano, who captured the world with his concept of the multicultural urban park Superkilen in Copenhagen. The organizers also invited one of Munich's leading urban planners, Martin Klamt.
"The German experience with migration is layered, not only because Germany is a dream destination for many refugees on a massive scale but also due to the experience of the country's reunification and the flow of people between the economically uneven parts of unified Germany," said reSITE's program director Osamu Okamura.
Carl Weisbrod, an expert in housing policy and the commissioner of city planning with over thirty years of experience, will come from New York. He has worked with mayor Michael Bloomberg and current New York mayor Bill de Blasio. Architect Mimi Hoang, who specializes in micro-units for young families, will also be attending.
The conference will begin both days at 09:30 and end at 17:30. Many experts will be available to meet and discuss at publicly accessible events throughout Prague. A public program will also be included.
reSITE is a non-profit platform that supports understanding and the interplay of urbanism, politics, culture, and economics in a world of ever-growing cities. For the fifth time, it invites world leaders in urban planning, architecture, and urban development to Prague. The reSITE conference has thus far been attended by over 2,300 guests and has welcomed more than 250 globally significant individuals to Prague.
