Prague - The protected villa of architect Otto Rothmayer in Břevnov, Prague is set for a significant reconstruction. The Gallery of the Capital City of Prague (GHMP), which manages it, plans to repair both the house and the garden. The institution also aims to restore the interior furnishings. GHMP has already announced a tender for the reconstruction. It expects to spend 17 million crowns on the restoration, according to information published in the public procurement information system.
The Gallery intends to begin the reconstruction this year, which should be completed by the end of next year, said GHMP director Milan Bufka to ČTK. The villa is expected to open to the public in 2013. Currently, it is inaccessible.
After the renovation, the villa should return to its appearance from the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, both internally and externally. "The reconstruction will be carried out with the intention of preserving the authenticity of the original structure, including the interiors and the garden, as much as possible," reads the tender documentation.
All preserved original building structures will be restored, including the external and internal wall surfaces, floors, and fixtures such as sinks or bathtubs. Built-in furniture as well as window and door frames will also be restored.
Architect Rothmayer's villa dates back to 1928 and 1929. Among other things, Rothmayer participated in modern modifications of the Castle, and the villa carries a similar architectural spirit.
Prague bought it in 2007 for 12 million crowns from the architect's son, Jan Rothmayer, who sold it on the condition that it would be accessible. At that time, the city leadership hoped that the state would fund the renovation.
