Prague - The long-unused heritage-protected Rothmayer Villa in Střešovice will be opened to the public next year. The new manager, the Museum of the Capital City of Prague, plans to open an exhibition dedicated to architect Otto Rothmayer and his teacher Josip Plečnik. This was announced by the museum's director Zuzana Strnadová.
The city will hand over the monument to the museum at the beginning of May. This was decided by the councilors. The museum also manages the nearby Müller Villa, which offers popular exhibitions among visitors. Both villas will form a logical unit, the councilors' resolution states.
The long-prepared renovation of the two-story Rothmayer Villa began while it was managed by the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague. The planned costs for the reconstruction and restoration work were 23 million crowns. The goal was, among other things, to remove non-original structural changes in the heritage building and to restore its appearance to that of the 1950s. The renovation was necessitated by the facade, which was leaking in some places. Restorers focused on the wooden parts of the interior, for example.
Otto Rothmayer, a student and later a collaborator of the prominent Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik, designed not only the house including its interiors but also the garden, its fencing, and outdoor furniture. The garden was also the setting for famous photographs by photographer Josef Sudek. The Rothmayer family lived in the Střešovice villa until 2008, when the architect's son sold the villa to Prague under the condition of its overall reconstruction and accessibility.
The restored villa will serve as a so-called house museum, just like the Müller Villa. Smaller groups of visitors will be able to view it by prior arrangement. A ticket for both villas could be joint.
