Hradec Králové/Dobrošov - Hradec Králové Region will begin the repair and construction of a new visitor center at the Dobrošov fortress in the Náchod area for approximately 90 million crowns. The region succeeded in its request for a subsidy, said Deputy Governor Martina Berdychová (Mayors and Eastern Bohemians) today. "We received a message that our project was chosen for support. At this moment, we have instructed to finalize the project documentation," said Berdychová. The project includes the repair of three underground halls, a staircase, and an elevator. Some surface fortification structures are also expected to be renovated. The visitor center should offer social facilities, refreshments, and a lecture hall.
The Dobrošov fortress is accessible only by appointment from the end of November to the end of March; due to nesting bats, the number of visitors is limited, said fortress administrator Richard Švanda today. During the season, there is one tour route through the fortress's underground, and the Jeřáb building is also occasionally accessible. In previous years, about 25,000 people visited the site annually. "Last year's attendance was higher, with 28,300 interested visitors," said Švanda.
The Hradec Králové Region acquired the Dobrošov fortress free of charge from the army, and tours for visitors are provided by the Náchod museum. The Dobrošov fortress was built to protect the republic from the expanding Nazi Germany, together with other border fortifications. During the Protectorate, the fortress was closed, and it remained abandoned until the 1960s after 1945. The first visitors entered the fortress on May 1, 1969.
