Friday, September 8 – Sunday, September 10, 2017, Automatic Mills, Between the Bridges, Pardubice
“Sharpening the senses, exploring the place, a shared yet highly personal and new experience of the space.”
Ian Mikyska, a young composer primarily engaged in artistic forms at the boundaries of sound: installations, text, performances, or video, created two sensory walks during the summer of 2017 for two unique spaces: the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia in Prague and the Automatic Mills in Pardubice. His sensory walks combine a sensitive approach to the place, small, often barely noticeable spatial interventions, work with text, sound, and authentic image; they explore ordinariness and exclusivity, inviting discovery and openness to other perceptual possibilities of knowledge.
An integral part of Ian's sensory walks is, in both cases, a brochure, a guide whose conceptual solution emerges from the author's debut: the collection Scores for Readers. The book does not merely guide the visitor through the space but sharpens their senses, points out details and unexpected contexts, shares Mikyska's personal experience with the visitor, while also allowing for other entirely personal ways of exploring the place. The visual appearance of the publications is the responsibility of young graphic designer Anastasia Vrublevská.
The ceremonial presentation of the author's sensory walk in Pardubice will take place on Friday, September 8, and the weekend of September 9 and 10, 2017, which he titled Deautomated Mills and which is focused on exploring the unique building of the Automatic Mills, which were built between 1910-1925 according to the designs of architect J. Gočár and fulfilled their original function until 2012. After more than three years of searching for a new owner, the Pardubice mills are now in the hands of private investor architect Lukáš Smetana and are awaiting extensive renovation. In the meantime, thanks to the owner’s friendly approach, they are open to artists and many independent cultural-artistic platforms. Among others, also the Pardubice association Offcity, which deals with public space, art, and architecture and which is the initiator and implementer of artistic residencies that are taking place in the mills during this summer and autumn. Ian Mikyska's sensory walk has become one of the selected projects supported by a scholarship and production support.
The initiation of the sensory walk will be accompanied by a companion program:
The premiere weekend will start with a concert of two improvisational music projects: the international trio THE MoND (Pasi Mäkelä / FIN, Ken Ganfield / USA, and Petr Vrba / CZ) based in Prague and local free-jazz-core group Friks (Zdeněk Závodný, František R. Václavík, Vít Hoigr), to which Ian Mikyska will also join (on Friday, September 8, 2017, at 20:00 in the DUB 2.0 space in the Automatic Mills, concerts organized by Seek Harbor Booking). Both projects will release their tapes that evening, Ian Mikyska his sensory guide publication.
On Saturday, September 9, 2017, the program will continue with a brunch and discussion in the courtyard of the Automatic Mills (from 11:00), while sensory walks will take place on both Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 to 19:00 based on reservations for specific times (reservations via email: [email protected]). The Saturday program will conclude at 19:30 in the Automatic Mills with the only Czech concert of the Hungarian ethnobigband Besh o droM. The wild ride in the style of Balkan brass bands is brought to the Automatic Mills by the mecca of Pardubice’s alternative culture, Divadlo 29.
Ian Mikyska's sensory walk will be accessible on other dates by prior arrangement at contact [email protected].
The project would not be possible without the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the statutory city of Pardubice, and the Foundation of Czech Architecture, and without the kind assistance of Divadlo 29, DUB 2.0, the Smetana couple, and many other involved artists and friends.
