We have completed two out of three holiday weekend workshops, where we set out to inhabit the yard of the Automatické mlýny in Pardubice and thus create a seed for a framework for the future more active use of the entire area. On the weekend of September 2 – 3, 2017, we will have our last workshop, which will not only be a pleasant conclusion of the project carried out under the creative residency of the Offcity association but also the beginning of something new: further settling, inhabiting, and reviving the mill yard.

The first two workshops were very successful. What we have created can be seen by everyone from the entrance to the site. And not just seen: don't hesitate to step through the open mill gates and test the furniture for yourself! A regularly operating café or bar in the mills does not yet exist, but anyone can sit here peacefully, whether alone, with friends, or children. Thanks to the work of many volunteers and the project authors, Kateřina Jirsová, Karolína Koupalová, and Anička Krtičková, benches, tables, children's sandbox, a playhouse, a wheeled swing, greenery has emerged, and a mobile community bar as well as various small items for everyone's enjoyment are ready for use.

At the last – third workshop, we will be finishing some furniture, play elements, and inventing and making small items for children to play with on Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3, from 10 AM to 5 PM. We welcome everyone who would like to lend a hand. If you want to sand, plane, screw, hammer, or simply work with us, please bring your own tools. Saws, sanders, cordless screwdrivers, drills, extension cords, and anything else you can use to make wooden furniture have all been useful so far. We are still looking for dishes for the mobile community bar: mainly deep plates, but also bowls, glasses, and cutlery.

The working Saturday and Sunday will again be supplemented with a cultural program, with which we will celebrate the successful conclusion of the project and christen everything that has been created.

On Saturday, September 2, 2017, the band DVA will come to the mill yard with their uniquely conceived concert. DVA, or Bára Ungerová and Jan Kratochvíl, now internationally known duo playing songs of non-existent nations, feel at home in Pardubice. They performed their first concerts on the stage of Divadlo 29, and Bára also worked for a few years at Divadlo 29 as the program director of Klub 29. DVA has performed practically all over the world in about 10 years of their existence, released several albums, created the soundtrack for the award-winning video game Botanicula by Amanita Design, or live soundtracks for silent films by G. Méliès, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, or dance performances by the VerteDance group. Around 5 PM, they will kick off their pancake DJing in the mill yard and after a short break, they will also play a special stroller set. Are you wondering what pancake DJing is and what a stroller set might look like? Let yourself be surprised!

After the evening concert, visitors will be able to head into the inner spaces of the Automatické mlýny, where a unique audiovisual performance by visual artist Aneta Šebelková, a graduate of AVU in Prague, will be premiered. Her performance titled Pinhole Cinema: Automatické mlýny was created during a two-week creative residency specifically for the spaces of the Automatické mlýny. The performance works with analog projection, light reflections, and live sound; it responds to the specific architectural space, working with its depth, echoes, and resonance. For the sound component of the performance, Aneta collaborated with musician Filip Jakš, her colleague from the group Ryba řvoucí.

The Saturday evening will then be closed at 8:30 PM with a concert by the band Ra, whose roots are closely tied to Pardubice, just like DVA. The band Ra (formerly Racoon's) plays reggae. They primarily draw from roots reggae, but do not limit themselves to just this style, and you will also find elements of ragga or dub in their music. The husky voice of singer Karolína Mbaye and the groovy rhythms encourage dancing: it looks like a promising party!

The Sunday part of the program will primarily be in the name of singing. Concurrently with the open workshop in the mill yard, there will be a workshop called Zpěvomatu with singer Ridina Ahmedová inside the mills, as well as in public spaces of the city. The aim of Zpěvomatu is to reach out to people from the street with live singing, often those who would not normally encounter singing. For singers, it is an opportunity to experience their voice in a different environment and in different contexts. Participation in the workshop is free; you only need to register at the email: [email protected].

The weekend program will then close at 7 PM with the screening of the Norwegian documentary film With Grandpa to the Moon directed by David Alræk, whose grandfather Kåre was always a fearless adventurer, an inventor with amazing ideas, a collector of experiences, and a source of inspiration for his photographic and directing activities. When Kåre is diagnosed with dementia, David is afraid that the memories of their shared life will be lost. But Grandpa Kåre refuses to give up and encourages David to continue seeking new adventures and experiences. This heartfelt and humorous film took 9 years to create and playfully reflects how new memories are formed while old ones disappear.

The project to revive the mill yard is led by a group of two artists and one architect (Kateřina Jirsová, Anička Krtičková, Karolína Koupalová), the Offcity association, and our other common friends and helpers, for whom the Automatické mlýny are a heartfelt matter.

The program would not be possible without the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the statutory city of Pardubice, and the Foundation for Czech Architecture, as well as the kind assistance of Divadlo 29, the Gallery of the City of Pardubice, the Terra Madoda association, the Smetana couple, and all the involved artists and friends.
