Jeseník – Jeseník is completing a major renovation of the mourning hall, which has served the public for more than 30 years. The city undertook its reconstruction due to its unsatisfactory technical and operational condition, which no longer met current requirements. Repairs began in the autumn and are expected to be completed by the end of the month, said the city hall spokeswoman Markéta Kaniová to ČTK. The renovations included repairing the building, modernizing technologies, and improving operational facilities. The costs reached 11 million crowns, with part covered by European grants. The mourning hall underwent changes with limited operations.
"The building was struggling with leaks through the roof structure, inadequate facilities, and high humidity. Therefore, modernization was essential for the mourning hall to continue serving the public with dignity and reliability," stated the director of Technical Services Jeseník, Petr Nedbal.
According to councilor Tomáš Vlazl, the mourning ceremony hall is a place of sensitive and significant character for the city's residents. "It was therefore important to think not only about its current condition but also about ensuring it can serve well in the coming years. The reconstruction will bring more economical technologies, lower energy costs, and will extend the building's lifespan," the councilor added on behalf of the city.
The builders replaced the windows, insulated the building, repaired the roof covering, and installed modern heating and cooling systems that should contribute to a more economical and eco-friendly operation. Interior adjustments, improved acoustics, new furnishings, and fully barrier-free access were also included.
According to the city hall spokeswoman, the mourning hall was not completely closed during the reconstruction. "From the end of March to the end of April, only its operation was limited. Funerals were held only on certain days and by arrangement with the bereaved. Alternative spaces were available, for example, in the Jeseník chapel," she added.
The city hall of Přerov recently started a major reconstruction of the mourning hall at its municipal cemetery in the Olomouc region as well. The city invested nearly 72 million crowns into its complete transformation. Work began at the end of 2024. Due to the closure of the mourning hall, the city chose two provisional locations for the final farewell. Religious funerals were held at St. Michael's Church, and civil ones at the cultural and social center Klub Teplo. Last year, the city included the reconstruction of the mourning hall among its main investments.
