Hradec Králové – The state enterprise Lesy České republiky (LČR) has completed the documentation for the construction permit of its new headquarters in Hradec Králové. The documentation is now being discussed with the relevant state administration authorities, and after addressing possible comments, a construction permit application will be submitted to the Hradec Králové magistrate. Eva Jouklová, the spokesperson for the company, informed ČTK. The construction preparations began in 2015, but were halted three years later due to worsened management caused by the bark beetle crisis. The enterprise returned to the project, which is expected to be the largest administrative timber building in the Czech Republic, in 2023.
The original project titled "Forests in the Forest" was created by architects Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof based on their victory in an international architectural competition in 2016. The enterprise, which manages almost half of the forests in the Czech Republic, also obtained a building permit for the construction. However, this permit later became invalid.
At the beginning of last year, LČR commissioned the revision and supplementation of the project documentation to a consortium including the Chybik+Kristof studio, K4, and Iva Stolka. In recent days, the company called on the architects and designers to begin work on the documentation for selecting the general contractor.
According to the current plans of the enterprise, the actual construction could start in 2027 and last four to five years in phases. The estimated cost is 1.5 billion crowns, based on current price lists for similar buildings.
The footprint of the proposed building is designed to resemble a tree, consisting of five limbs. The building is expected to meet requirements for an energy-passive house. "The usable area of the office spaces and technical facilities of the building is to be 12,000 square meters," the spokesperson stated.
According to Lesy ČR, the building should serve as inspiration and a model for other investors. "With this project, we are sending a signal to other construction clients that it is possible, and is already common in other European countries, to use wood as a high-quality, environmentally friendly, and sustainable building material," stated the CEO of Lesy ČR, Dalibor Šafařík.
The Directorate of State Forests is currently located in a building made of panels from the 1970s. The object, which was once the headquarters of the Eastern Bohemian State Forests, is considered statically unstable, has no insulation, lacks air conditioning, and most offices do not meet the standards.
The new headquarters in Hradec Králové is to be in the same location as the current directorate, at the site of the enterprise's warehouses. According to the original plans, the current office buildings were to be demolished after construction. Lesy ČR had previously exchanged the necessary land with the city of Hradec Králové for the development of the entire complex.
