Liberec – The Liberec Region is planning the construction of a new depository and is preparing a competition for a designer. The region wants to apply for grants from the European Union funds in the new programming period for the construction of the depository. The costs are preliminarily estimated at 200 million crowns, said Květa Vinklátová (Mayors for the Liberec Region), the deputy governor for culture and heritage care, to ČTK today. Regional councilors approved the purchase of land for the construction of the depository today.
The depository will be built on land belonging to the company Silnice LK. Although it is a regional company, the region must purchase the land at a price according to an expert assessment. "In order not to economically disadvantage the company," said governor Martin Půta (Mayors for the Liberec Region). The region will pay 2.75 million crowns for the land with a total area of 6,875 m². Initially, there was discussion about construction on the adjacent plot, but according to Půta, that would have been even more costly. The land would need an access road, and it was also in the protective zone of very high voltage lines.
The Liberec Region owns several hundred thousand collection items of incalculable historical value, their market value is estimated at hundreds of millions of crowns. These are small items ranging from postcards to stamps to jewelry, but also very large assets, such as historical furniture or various technical devices. The largest depositories are in Česká Lípa, Kravaře, Sloup in Bohemia, the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec, the Regional Gallery in Liberec, as well as in Mníšek, Raspenava, or Jablonec nad Nisou.
Thousands of items currently stored in often inadequate conditions are to be moved to Český Dub. The study of the depository for the region was developed by the studio Adam Rujbr Architects. "We were looking for an architectural firm with experience in large passive buildings," Vinklátová added. Depositories require stable humidity and temperature for the preservation of valuable items, and they are therefore operationally very demanding. According to the deputy governor, the passive standard is the most suitable solution.
