Prague - On May 1st, the Václav Havel Bench will be ceremonially unveiled at Maltézské Square in Prague. Havel's Bench is a global concept aimed at creating a network of places in public spaces that will contribute to meetings and dialogue in the spirit of the values of the former Czech president. The Václav Havel Library informed ČTK about this today; the Prague memorial is being created in cooperation with the library and the city of Prague. The Václav Havel Bench (Havel's Place) already stands in Washington, Dublin, and Barcelona.
The idea to build a memorial dedicated to Václav Havel was brought forth by the Czech ambassador to the United States, Petr Gandalovič. He approached architect and designer Bořek Šípek with a request to create a public artwork inspired by the personality and democratic ideals of the late president Václav Havel. Šípek designed two metal garden chairs with a round table, which is penetrated by a linden tree, the Czech national tree.
