Nový Jičín

Nový Jičín - In the Nový Jičín region, seven family houses have already been demolished due to a structural engineer's decision, following the floods on Wednesday. Heavy machinery demolished the most properties in Jeseník nad Odrou, where the flood caused the greatest damage. Dozens of other demolitions are under assessment. It is still unclear how many of the flooded houses will actually be brought down, said Josef Gabzdyl, spokesman for the Nový Jičín town hall. For most of the day, the region experienced heavy rain, which negatively affected people's mental well-being and hindered cleanup efforts.

"In Jeseník nad Odrou, there should be a third demolition tonight. However, six more houses already have demolition orders. Three houses will be partially demolished," said Tomáš Machýček, the mayor of the municipality, to ČTK. The cleanup of the flooded homes, which continued for the fourth day, was complicated by the rainy weather. "It's crazy because in some places, work is impossible, water is just standing there," he added. "What gets cleaned gets muddy again shortly after," added Ivan Týle, the mayor of Nový Jičín.
According to Gabzdyl, the affected people also need various aids and supplies. "The greatest need is for dehumidifiers, containers, raincoats, rubber gloves, rubber boots, disinfectants, cleaning supplies, and high-pressure washers," he specified.
According to Gabzdyl, the city also demands that some healthcare workers be present in the flooded area to address minor injuries. "There is no time to deal with this, and there is a fear of the spread of infectious diseases," he explained.
According to Simona Součková, spokesperson for the Nový Jičín hospital, about twenty people sought medical treatment from Saturday to this morning. "More and more people are appearing who are helping with cleanup efforts in the flooded areas. These mainly involve injuries from sharp rusty objects - wires, nails, which pose a risk of infection. Injured limbs are being disinfected, covered with bandages, or stabilized in plaster splints," the spokesperson told ČTK. For example, in the pediatric ward, there is a five-year-old girl who stepped on a rusty nail in a flooded area. Two other patients remain in the surgical ward, and two more women are in the internal medicine department.
"Among the patients who sought outpatient help was a young woman who inhaled dirty water and suffered from nausea. Her condition also suggested severe hypothermia. After outpatient treatment, she was also given antibiotics. An acute psychosis was diagnosed in one woman." Součková added. Regional hygienists have so far identified two cases of diarrhea diseases in the affected area.
On Monday, according to Gabzdyl, the mayors of the eight affected municipalities in the region will meet in Nový Jičín to discuss further coordination of recovery efforts. According to Gabzdyl, Nový Jičín will send one-third of the current 300 soldiers helping with flood damage cleanup to the surrounding municipalities. One hundred soldiers are to be relocated to Kunín, Šenov, and Životice.
