Nový Jičín

Nový Jičín - Due to the catastrophic floods, dozens of houses will disappear in the Nový Jičín area. The first water-damaged buildings have already begun to be demolished. The flood swept through the region on Wednesday and seriously damaged 450 houses and 10 bridges, with damages amounting to hundreds of millions of crowns. Josef Gabzdyl, spokesman for Nový Jičín, said today. People, with the help of firefighters and soldiers, are still cleaning up the aftermath of the floods. They are pumping water out of basements and other buildings, continuing to clear flooded homes, and cleaning houses from layers of mud. Cleanup work will extend into the coming days.
In addition to dozens of firefighters, the seventh mechanized brigade is assisting in the Nový Jičín area with 500 soldiers and 35 vehicles. According to brigade commander Ivo Střechy, the cleaning and rescue operations are continuing without major problems.
"The restoration of basic infrastructure is underway, and the clearing of affected homes and the demolition of houses that did not survive the disaster is ongoing," he described the current situation. Clearing up the aftermath has already taken two days in the region and according to Střechy, it will extend into the coming days. Defense Minister Martin Barták promised today during a visit to Northern Moravia that the military will remain in the affected areas for as long as needed.
According to the Nový Jičín town hall, drivers should avoid traveling on road I/57 between Nový Jičín and Hodslavice and between Nový Jičín and Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. "Due to the recent floods, trees are still falling here, and heavy machinery is moving along the road. There are traffic jams forming in the area, so it is better to avoid it or use detours," explained the spokesman for Nový Jičín.
According to information from the Nový Jičín crisis staff, water-damaged family homes will be demolished in the city parts Bludovice and Žilina, as well as in Kunín, Šenov near Nový Jičín, Jeseník nad Odrou, Životice near Nový Jičín, and Hodslavice. For example, in Jeseník nad Odrou, where 1,900 residents live, the structural engineer has already decided to demolish five houses. The sixth house will be partially demolished.
"People affected by the floods currently need shovels, buckets, rags, rubber boots, as well as disinfectants, food, and clothing the most. Humanitarian aid is coming from all over the country, from Poland, and from Slovakia," said Gabzdyl. Companies are also helping, offers for accommodation for children in summer camps are emerging, and volunteers are arriving.
To account number 43-5060060227/010, where Nový Jičín is collecting money for people affected by the floods, donors have so far sent 1.1 million crowns. According to Gabzdyl, this money will be used to purchase the most essential supplies and will go directly to the citizens of Nový Jičín and neighboring affected municipalities, for which the city is providing basic services. A crisis hotline 950 730 730 is also available continuously.
