Brno - The Brno bus station Zvonařka is set to begin reconstruction in October or November. The repeated tender is expected to conclude at the end of September, from which a construction company will be selected that will complete the work, costing over 100 million crowns, by the end of next year, said Antonín Grund, chairman of the board of ČSAD Brno-město holding, to ČTK. The brutalist building from the 1970s will take on a significantly more welcoming appearance than it currently has.
Construction was originally supposed to start last summer, but delays with processing the grant, which will cover about three-quarters of the costs, and with the tender have pushed the start to this fall. "The deadlines are very tight, but there is still enough time to get it done," Grund said.
The first phase of work is expected to begin in the fall, which includes lighting and revitalization of the ceiling, that is, the concrete ceiling, on whose upper part there is a parking area for buses. The gloomy impression of the dimly lit space will thus disappear. "This phase should be completed by next spring, and in the meantime, the second phase will begin, which includes the main construction work," Grund said. This includes the repair of roadways and platforms, a guiding light system, and the construction of a new dispatch building on Opuštěná street, where there used to be sales stalls. In the current dispatch building on Plotní street, there will be administrative spaces for the owners and facilities for drivers.
Young Brno architects Michal Krištof and Ondřej Chybík worked on the reconstruction project, stating that it is a beautiful example of a brutalist building that needs to be cleaned and better lit. They anticipate that it will then integrate well into the newly emerging so-called southern center.
Zvonařka is a significant transport hub that sees about 1000 regional, national, and international buses arrive daily. Between 25,000 and 30,000 people pass through it each day, even though some long-distance buses go to the Grand and regional lines terminate at public transport nodes. From next year, after more than 40 years, it will be accessible by tram, as the track will be relocated from Dornych to Plotní street.
