Brno - The reconstruction of the bus station in Brno at Zvonařka is set to begin during the summer holidays. The owner, ČSAD Brno-město holding, has received a grant from European funds. They are now initiating a selection process for a construction company, with the competitive price exceeding 100 million crowns; the grant will cover approximately three-quarters of the costs, said Antonín Grund, the chairman of the board, to ČTK today.
The station was built in the second half of the 1970s to replace the capacity-inadequate station near the Grand Hotel. Architecturally, it is a manifestation of brutalism and is considered an unfriendly and gloomy place in Brno. Two years ago, Brno architects Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof worked on a vision for its transformation.
During the reconstruction, a new check-in hall will be created opposite Vaňkovka on Opuštěná Street, and the entire space will receive new lighting because, due to the concrete roof that serves as a parking lot, the area remains dark even on sunny days. "We like the architecture of the station; it just needs a thorough cleaning," Chybík said years ago.
Originally, construction was supposed to start last year, but delays with the grant application prevented that. "We want to start as soon as we select a company, also because of the technological processes that depend on the weather," Grund said. It is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Zvonařka is a significant transportation hub, with about 1,000 regional, domestic, and international buses arriving daily. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 people pass through it each day, even though some long-distance buses go to the Grand Hotel and regional lines terminate at public transportation hubs. Starting next year, it will be accessible by tram for the first time in over 40 years, as the track will be relocated from Dornych to Plotní Street.
