Energy-efficient? Sterile white? Modular? What are the current trends in the design of healthcare buildings? This is answered by the publication "Hospital Architecture in the 21st Century" by Michal Juha and Karel Fořtl from the Institute of Building Science at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU. The book is intended for architecture students, operators and founders of hospitals, and healthcare personnel. This year's edition of the reVize Typology conference will also focus on hospitals, taking place on April 25 at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague.

Healthcare buildings are one of the most complex architectural disciplines. The scientific development of medicine and related fields brings new requirements that must be met with new architectural and technological designs.

The book describes the general principles of hospital design, their basic internal and external operational links. It not only approaches the present and history of hospital architecture but also complements the outlook into the future. It examines the relationships between the environment, staff, and patients, which play a significant role in the effectiveness of treatment and staff satisfaction. The text goes into detail about the needs of all hospital operations, as well as the related outpatient services. The text is illustrated with operational diagrams and examples of top domestic and foreign projects.

"Let us not rejoice that hospitals will disappear from our lives. New diseases will emerge that we will not know how to treat, new pandemics, new demands from future civilizations, famines, and unfortunately, perhaps even new wars. Therefore, we will need hospitals. Although we do not know what beds, incubators, examination rooms, operating rooms will look like, or how we will treat, we do know that we will treat," says architect Michal Juha.

This book is the latest in a series of educational and popularization texts from the Institute of Building Science at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU. It builds on the work of Professor František Čermák, the founder of the field of healthcare buildings at CTU, and his student and long-term collaborator doc. Karel Fořtl. At the same time, it is the introductory publication of the new Edition 17/24 on the built environment.

The authors will present the book during this year's reVize Typology conference – Hospitals in the 21st Century. This will focus on the buildings and areas of hospitals and is primarily aimed at professionals involved in the commissioning, design, construction, and operation of hospitals, representatives of public administration and self-government, and private operators of healthcare facilities. The goal of the conference is to discuss topics related to the planning and preparation of hospital buildings, their standards, parameters, and the evaluation of completed constructions. It will also present current trends in hospital construction as well as significant completed examples in the Czech Republic. The conference will take place on April 25, 2024, at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague. A detailed program can be found at revizetypologie.cz.
