Prague – The new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists in Radotín is expected to open in mid-July this year. The cost of constructing the bridge is 50 million crowns. This was announced today by Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Pirates). The original bridge had been in very poor condition for many years. The project for the bridge and the tender for the contractor were prepared by the Prague 16 municipality, and the funds for the repair were provided by the city hall. Workers today installed the bridge structure, the so-called deck.
"Three and a half years ago, I invited the original architect, Mr. (Josef) Pleskot with the designers, to see if they could find a solution. And they succeeded. The solution is that a completely new deck and a new central pylon on which it is suspended will be made. The city hall will pay for the bridge, but it was the Radotín municipality that did the heavy lifting," Scheinherr said.
The existing bridge from 1994 had been in a deplorable condition for many years, having been damaged by floods in 2002 and 2013, and had to be supported to prevent it from collapsing. At one point, only one person could cross it at a time. The city originally considered demolishing it and building a new one for about 100 million. The process was then delayed for more than two years due to a complaint from one of the competition participants to the antimonopoly office.
Subsequently, the city had the project redone. The new bridge will be larger and higher, and at four meters, also somewhat wider.
Prague has long-standing problems with the condition of bridges and footbridges. In December 2017, a footbridge between Císařský Island and Troja collapsed, injuring four people in the accident. The city completed the construction of a replacement two years ago. This year, construction began on a new bridge between Karlín and Holešovice across Štvanice Island. Bridges such as Libeňský, Hlávkův, or Palackého are in poor condition. The technical administration of roads is also repairing the Barrandov Bridge.
