Prague - The new stage that the Vinohrady Theatre needs will cost the capital city as the building owner about 300 million crowns. According to the councilor for culture Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL/Trojkoalice), it must be tailor-made. The original stage technology was designed according to the proposals of František Křižík. The theatre will celebrate its 110th anniversary next year.

"The stage has never been changed. The National Theatre has already had its third one during its operation," said the councilor at the meeting of the municipal committee for culture. In the budget for next year, the city allocated 20 million crowns for the development of the new stage project. The replacement will then take place in 2018 or 2019. It will include all stage technology and trap doors. The price will arise from the project and the subsequent public tender.

The Art Nouveau building in Míru Square was created between 1905 and 1907 according to the design of architect Alois Čenský. The theatre was opened on November 24, 1907, with the first performance being the play Godiva by Jaroslav Vrchlický.

Currently, the city is also renovating the theatre Na Zábradlí. There, the investment was prompted by a dispute regarding entry into the building, which had so far been from the neighboring property of a private owner. After repairs costing 39.5 million crowns excluding VAT, the theatre will have new facilities, a café, and a modern foyer in the courtyard with access to the auditorium from a covered courtyard. The building of the theatre has been owned by Prague since 1993.
