Prague – The capital city is looking for tenants for several renovated cubicles on the embankments, which have so far served as storage. They should be completed on Hořejším nábřeží by the end of May and on the Podskalské embankment by the end of June. City representatives and architect Petr Janda, who designed the new look of the embankments, told journalists today. Some of the cubicles will be equipped with giant windows made in Thailand. Especially the Podskalské embankment attracts thousands of visitors during the season.
The city announced the tender on April 6 and it concerns one cubicle on Rašínovo nábřeží and six on Hořejším. They are intended to serve as three cafés, facilities for one of them, and two studios. Interested parties have 30 days to submit their offers.
According to Jiří Sulženko, curator of Prague's embankments, the quality of the proposed project will be the most important factor, constituting half of the evaluation. The city aims to attract original operators. The minimum rent for gastronomic operations is 300 crowns per square meter per month, while for studios it is 180 crowns. The area of the cubicles ranges from approximately 55 to 120 square meters.
The cubicles on Hořejším nábřeží are expected to be completed by the end of May, and those on Rašínovo nábřeží by the end of June. New tenants will have to furnish the spaces. Some previous tenants, like the famous Bajkazyl, had their contracts extended and will return to their original location.
Six of the 19 renovated cubicles will be equipped with large designer windows. They have a half-spherical shape and can be opened entirely to make the space as accessible as possible. According to architect Janda, the glass is so large that it could not be produced by a regular line and a specialized company had to be hired. They have a thickness of six to seven centimeters, a similar type is used for marine aquariums. The specialized company has factories in the USA and Thailand. "Since we are closer to transportation to Thailand, they were manufactured there and shipped here by boat via Hamburg," said the architect. They will be installed at the very end of the cubicles' renovation.
A total of 19 cubicles are being reconstructed on both embankments, of which five will have restrooms. The function of the remaining ones is divided among cafés, galleries, and studios. "At this point, 30 million crowns have been invested in electrical, waste, and water connections on Hořejším nábřeží and 90 million crowns for all 19 cubicles that are being prepared for future use," added Sulženko.
The repairs of the embankments were initiated by the city last year, and the first phase is expected to cost 225 million crowns according to the project. It includes the renovation of cubicles, the establishment of network infrastructure, and the installation of new furniture. According to Prague councilor for property Jan Chabr (TOP 09), the Prague coalition will still decide how much it will continue with the other plans of the previous leadership. Those plans included, for example, the construction of pools in the river serving as spas.
