Olomouc - The estimated costs for the planned construction of a covered swimming pool in Olomouc, which is to be built on land next to the city aquapark, have significantly increased. While experts valued it at 250 million Czech crowns in autumn 2023, it is now estimated to range between 360 and 390 million crowns. This week, the city council discussed the project's preparation and tasked the management of Aquapark Olomouc with preparing financing options for the construction of the 25-meter pool. Deputy Mayor Tomáš Pejpek (ProOlomouc) informed about it on social media.
The city council approved the preparation of the swimming pool project in November 2023 and set obtaining a grant, which could amount to up to 100 million crowns according to previous estimates, as a condition for starting its construction. The new pool is intended to serve for swimming education for schools and clubs during the reconstruction of the large hall of the swimming stadium near the city center. Afterward, the new swimming pool is expected to enhance the available covered water area for the public and sports clubs in Olomouc. The pool is to be built next to the summer part of the aquapark to connect both facilities.
Currently, there is an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool in Olomouc, and people can also go to the aquapark, which opened in the outskirts of Olomouc in the summer of 2009. Aquapark Olomouc took out a loan for its construction, which is being repaid with city grants. The total costs for building the aquapark are expected to exceed one billion crowns. According to Dalibor Přikryl, the director of Aquapark Olomouc, the current swimming area in Olomouc is insufficient, and the demand from the public is high. Additionally, the city lacks a pool for mandatory swimming education for school-age children. The situation will worsen after the planned reconstruction of the indoor pool begins, which will take two years.
