Brno - The Ministry of the Environment has confirmed that the EIA documentation, i.e., the environmental impact assessment for the construction of the new Brno railway station in the relocated position is in accordance with the updated documentation for the zoning decision. Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál stated this today at a press conference for the ANO movement. He also mentioned that the South Bohemian Region will then issue the zoning decision. The South Bohemians are leading the construction proceedings due to bias. "According to the deadlines of administrative proceedings, the zoning decision should be issued by the end of this year. Unfortunately, the Children of the Earth intend to challenge this in court, which they have announced several times. Instead of a constructive discussion among the parties involved, a legal battle of law firms opens up again," said Vokřál.
This year, both the representatives of the region and the representatives of the city decided on the relocation of the station to the location of the freight lower station. The final decision on where the station will be located is to be made by the government. It was supposed to happen by the end of June, but so far there is no stance from the central commission of the Ministry of Transport. The commission postponed its decision after the April meeting, and a date for the next meeting has yet to be determined.
The association of freight carriers ŽESNAD has intervened in the matter, demanding a solution for sufficient capacity for the growing volumes of freight transport. They argue that the proposed state, according to the feasibility study, does not meet their needs and argue that it could lead to a collapse of transport.
The new station in the relocated position is expected to cost approximately 46 billion crowns, and according to some interested experts and politicians, construction could start in 2021 or 2022. However, the relocation has many opponents who have long fought against it and will continue to fight. The current station is already at capacity limits during peak traffic times and is insufficient for rising transport demands. The new station is also expected to connect to the underground railway, which is supposed to solve the capacity problems of surface transport.
