Brno - The reconstruction of the Brno railway junction, which includes the controversial relocation of the station, is expected to obtain a zoning decision this year. Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD) told reporters today. Municipal officials are currently deciding on appeals against the zoning decision issued last year by the building authority for the Brno-střed city district. The process of issuing the decision and appeals has already taken place once, during which the municipal office rejected objections and issued the decision. However, it was later annulled by the court. The investor subsequently submitted a new application. The reconstruction of the railway junction is the largest construction project in Brno in recent decades, involving more than 1,000 construction objects, and according to the civic coalition "Nádraží v centru" (Station in the Center), it is by far the largest construction project in the Czech Republic. It is controversial. In a referendum held several years ago, people rejected the relocation of the station from the center of Brno. The current city council coalition, including ČSSD and ODS, supports the construction, arguing that it is already in progress. They claim that modernizing the lines with the station in the center would require such complex changes to the zoning plan and other documents that it would not be possible to use EU funds for the construction due to delays. Opponents, however, argue that the giant project, which a significant part of the public disagrees with, will not succeed, and thus European subsidies will not come to Brno. Onderka today cited the ongoing reconstruction of the Vienna train station as an argument. According to him, it was also a controversial project, but the city was able to explain it to the people. Viennese officials, according to him, built a temporary observation tower at the construction site, which became a sought-after attraction. "They familiarize citizens with what it will bring and how it will be better. We will try to transfer these things to Brno," he promised. The investor of the construction is the Railway Infrastructure Administration. It has so far completed the first phase of the construction of a new parking station. Part of the investment of 3.3 billion crowns included, for example, a cleaning station for rail vehicles and a road underpass beneath the tracks, connecting Sokolova and Bohunická streets. The reconstruction of the Brno railway junction was originally planned to start in 2006. A previously issued zoning decision was annulled by the court two years later.
