Olomouc - The Olomouc city hall has commissioned a study on the future shape of the Flora Exhibition Grounds, which, in addition to exhibition pavilions, includes vast parks surrounding the historic center of Olomouc. The study will cover an area of approximately seven hectares, said architect Zdeněk Sendler, who won the competition for the study's preparation.
The entire Flora Exhibition Grounds, which was designed in the 1960s, is to be cleared of non-functional elements according to the planned study. It should become a sought-after urban park for residents, where it will also be possible to organize occasional exhibition, cultural, and sports events. "In broader terms, the study addresses the rehabilitation of the park ring directly connected to the historic city center," said Deputy Mayor Aleš Jakubec (TOP 09).
Experts have proposed to enhance the eastern parts of Smetana Gardens with new attractions, such as a children's world, water biotope, café, social facilities, or a community garden. "There is also the possibility of potential construction of a multifunctional hall for a flower market, which could also serve as a small sports hall, renovation of pavilions G and H, or the construction of new parking facilities," said Jiří Uhlíř, director of Flora Exhibition Grounds.
Representatives of the city hall will discuss the spatial study of the Flora Exhibition Grounds with the public on November 21. The city council will then discuss the study at the beginning of December. "We intentionally did not want to discuss the study behind closed doors. We want to discuss it with the people of Olomouc, neighbors, users, and the entire wider public," Jakubec noted.
The history of the exhibition grounds dates back to 1966, when the budget organization Olomoucké výstavní sady was established. The Flora Olomouc Exhibition Company was founded in 2000 by the city hall, which is the sole owner of the company. Several large exhibition events and fairs are held annually in the exhibition area, among which the most famous is the international flower fair Flora.
