Kladno - The city plans to start repairing the roof of the Kladno ice stadium next year, as it is in poor technical condition and cannot withstand the weight of snow. A project is currently being prepared, with the reconstruction estimated to cost 50 million. The exact costs will be known to the city hall only after the project is completed. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Kladno city hall, Lenka Růžková, in response to a query from ČTK.
The city regularly has the roof inspected by a structural engineer, and according to the spokesperson, additional ongoing and regular inspections are also conducted. "Climbers are on standby to clear snow from the roof in case it snows," Růžková added.
The nearly sixty-year-old roof was repaired in 1998 and again during the stadium's modernization in 2014. However, according to the former director of the city's Sports Facilities, Lukáš Kubica, it was not a repair but a securing, and it was clear from the beginning that a new roof would be needed, not a repair. At that time, the city received a five-year warranty from the contractor for the securing on the condition of annual inspections. "Due to the incompetence of our predecessors, we have an expensive umbrella instead of a roof for the ice stadium. However, we need the hall mainly in the winter months, when it must withstand the weight of snow, not just in the summer, and that is precisely what the reconstruction needs to address," said Kladno mayor Milan Volf (Volba pro Kladno).
The start date for the work has not yet been determined; it will emerge from the project and will also depend on the course of the tender. The stadium belongs to the city, and it is home to the first league ice hockey club Rytíři Kladno. Kladno no longer holds a stake in it.
