Ostrava - Ostrava is looking for a professional team to create an urban design for the area around the Main Train Station. The city has already announced a public tender for the proposal creator. The professional team should consist of architects and transport specialists. Interested parties can submit their bids until the end of January. This was announced today by the spokesperson for the city hall, Gabriela Pokorná. The selection committee will take into account not only the quality of the proposed solution but also the qualifications of the team members and the proposed price.

The Main Train Station in Ostrava is an important transport hub and one of the most significant gateways to the city. However, its current appearance is inadequate, the spokesperson stated. In the past, the city of Ostrava has considered several variants for solutions to the area in front of the train station. The latest discussions involved placing a transport museum and relocating the tram loop. Ultimately, for economic and operational reasons, the city abandoned this plan.

"The solution for the Main Train Station is a bit of an evergreen, however, what the various proposals and their creators always encountered was the solution for tram transport in the area, accessibility, and meaningful transfer connections. For the current assignment, we have utilized all the acquired experiences and information with the aim of ensuring its feasibility," said the investment deputy mayor Zuzana Bajgarová (ANO).

The city wants the station to be perceived as one of the main transfer terminals in the city, part of a modern public space. There are also plans for a potential transport museum. The city's project should align with the planned reconstruction of the railway junction, which includes, among other things, a complete reconstruction of the track and access to the platforms. Following the construction of the high-speed line to Ostrava, the Main Train Station will also be one of the key stops.

"After a series of negotiations with representatives of the Railway Administration, the city agreed on an approach variant to the platforms via an underpass, which represents the most efficient connection between the train platforms, the public transport platforms, and the planned underground parking. In this context, it is necessary to also reconstruct the forecourt, including the dominant roofing, which is not comprehensively part of the Railway Administration's construction. The solution will also include pedestrian and cycling connections to the surroundings," said Pokorná. Therefore, the city is looking for an experienced design team led by an urban architect. The council will decide on the selection of the urban design contractor in February.
