Park Bedřich in Židenice, Brno will open at the beginning of May

Brno - A new park named Bedřich will be opened to the public in the Brno district of Židenice at the beginning of May. The local authority has created it on an overgrown vacant lot at the corner of Václavkovy and Bubeníčkovy streets. It is named after the literary critic and theorist Bedřich Václavek. While resting here, people will find new benches, landscaped greenery, and children will also find a carousel, said Židenice Deputy Mayor Petr Kunc to ČTK today.

The local authority paid three million crowns for the new park, which it received from the city council, and it was developed according to the design by architect Jana Drochytková. The idea of naming Brno parks after significant figures with first names came from a competition organized by Mendel University. Václavek was a member of the avant-garde group Devětsil and developed the direction of socialist realism. He perished in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

There are still some trees and flowers to be planted in the park. "The park features concrete areas where verses by Bedřich Václavek, after whom the park is named, are engraved. His bust is also located here," Kunc stated. Before 1989, it stood in front of the White House on Žerotínovo náměstí.

The corner of the streets has been empty since the end of World War II. Previously, there was a building here that was destroyed by bombing. For many years, trees grew here without significant intervention, and the area was not maintained. Now there is also a camera system in operation, which is intended to prevent vandalism.

Židenice is also trying to cultivate other public spaces, whether through the revitalization of parks or the construction of new ones. In Juliánov, for example, a park named after Marie Kudeříková, who was an active member of the domestic resistance during World War II, is being created. It is expected to be completed by the end of August.

The local authority is also revitalizing the park in Stará osada, where 100 new trees have been planted. It is also preparing a project for the revitalization of the park on Kudelova Street.
