České Budějovice – The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the project of the České Budějovice multifunctional center. The coalition has so far halted preparations for its construction. The police have turned to the city council's leadership to provide them with materials about the project. Jiří Svoboda (ANO), the mayor of České Budějovice, said this to the Czech News Agency today. The multifunctional center was to be built in place of the current sports hall. The originally estimated costs for the project were around 300 million crowns, but the latest forecasts showed that the construction would cost approximately 551 million crowns.

Svoboda believes that the police will dismiss the complaint after their investigation and will not pursue it. "From the perspective of the municipal law, the municipality has full competence to decide what it wants and how it wants to potentially build it," said Svoboda.

Construction of the multifunctional center was supposed to start this May. The idea of a new hall was primarily advocated by the České Budějovice volleyball club, which is among the Czech elite. The parameters of the current hall do not meet the requirements for international matches. The low ceiling is particularly inadequate. Other sports entities that use the hall were against the construction of the multifunctional center. They argued that the new project did not consider some sports in its parameters.

It is currently unclear whether the city will continue with the project. Svoboda previously stated that the coalition wants the multifunctional center, but not in the prepared version. He admitted that it is not excluded that the center could be built in a different location. This would mean postponing the demolition of the current hall.
