Prague – The modifications of Chaplin Square in Prague's Barrandov will be carried out for the Prague 5 municipality by the company Gardenline for approximately 35.9 million crowns excluding VAT. The city council of the district decided this week on the selection of the contractor for the project that has been in preparation for years. According to the deputy mayor of Prague 5, Lubomír Brož (ANO), the municipality would like to sign the contract with the company by the end of February, with the work expected to be completed within 26 weeks of signing.
The company selected by the municipality in the tender offered the second-lowest price; the bid from Opreko was about five million crowns lower. However, the bid with the lower price, according to the evaluation committee, did not include all the necessary documents, which the company also failed to provide even after a subsequent request. Therefore, the committee decided to exclude it from the tender, to which the company responded by sending objections, which the city council rejected.
The municipality will replace public lighting in the square and install drinking fountains and an irrigation system utilizing rainwater. According to a study commissioned by the municipality, the project will also include the placement of new furnishings and play elements, landscaping, as well as the maintenance and cleaning of the statues located in the square, especially the sculpture of Charlie Chaplin, after whom the area is named.
The panel housing estate was built in Barrandov in the 1980s, and an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people live there. The development is connected to the west with the original film studios and a villa district. In 2003, a tram line connected the housing estate with the city center, which the transport company is now extending to Holyně. Subsequently, it will continue to Slivenec. A new development by the Finep company surrounded by a park is planned to the west of the housing estate in the future.
