During the ceremonial event on November 16, 2012, the Zumtobel Group Awards were presented in the building of the former power plant in central Berlin. The architecture award for supporting sustainability and humanity in the built environment, funded with a total amount of 140,000 EUR, was awarded to Michaeli Murphy and David Saladik from the American architectural firm MASS DESIGN GROUP for the Butaro Hospital project in Rwanda and to Doina Petrescu and Constantin Petcu from atelier d’architecture autogérée (AAA) for the R-URBAN initiative in Colombes, a social hotbed on the outskirts of Paris.

Solutions Showing the Way Both projects convinced the jury and guests with their comprehensive understanding of architecture, collaboration with other disciplines, and being socially beneficial organizations, as well as the consistent involvement of residents in both the planning and implementation phases. “We are very pleased to honor two young architectural firms today that exemplify greater sustainability and humanity. They have developed solutions showing the way, particularly in the area of social issues both in the Western world and in developing countries. Many innovative connections were found in collaboration with other experts and specialists,” emphasized Mr. Harald Sommerer, CEO of the Zumtobel Group, in his congratulatory speech to the award winners.
