Ústí nad Labem - A large reconstruction of the center of Ústí nad Labem for approximately 126 million crowns excluding VAT is delayed. The construction was complicated not only by the weather but also by the discovery of basements and cavities on Hrnčířská Street. Additionally, the city changed an already laid section of pavement due to complaints from citizens. Residents of Ústí could take a walk through the new square likely in the autumn, said the mayor of the central district, Radek Vonka, today to ČTK.

The largest construction work in Ústí since the end of the war began last July. The completion date was set for August 2006. "The work is very complicated, construction is taking place in several locations at once. If no unforeseen issues arise, I hope the center will be renovated by autumn," stated Vonka.
Central Mírové Square is under construction in several places. During the year, public transport stops and taxi stands were changed. It is not possible for strollers or wheelchairs to pass through the center of the city at all. "We are asking residents for patience and understanding," said Vonka. In Hrnčířská Street, where reconstruction began, there are still unfinished works. "They will be removed as soon as the weather conditions allow," said the mayor. So far, he has reportedly received only a few complaints from citizens.
Some residents criticized the change in pavement. People were particularly bothered by the gaps between the granite cubes. Thus, split cubes were replaced with cut ones, which have a smooth surface. This change resulted in an increase in the construction cost by several million crowns.
After the completion of the construction, the city will receive 110 million crowns from the European Union, and part will be paid by the state. After the modifications, there will be benches, drinking fountains, and fountains in the center of the regional city. The public transport stops will be moved to adjacent streets, which should help alleviate traffic.
New department stores are also growing in the square. Next to the Sever and Špalíček complexes, there is a new building of HVB Bank, and the company AZ Sanace will begin construction of the Zdar Palace in April.
