The Samsonova fountain in České Budějovice has new lighting

České Budějovice - The dominant feature of the historic square in České Budějovice, the Samson Fountain, has new lighting after nine years. The statue of Samson with the lion, four Atlanteans, the heads of four gargoyles, shells, and the column itself are illuminated from today's date by yellow and green lights from the fountain's pool. Martin Kalač from the company 1. JVS, which takes care of the fountains and drinking fountains in the city, told this to the journalists.
    The new lights turn on every fifteen minutes when the high jet of water from Samson at the top of the fountain starts. The city paid over 300,000 crowns for them and the necessary repairs to the stone part. "The lighting elements were at the end of their lifespan after nine years of operation. Another reason was to revitalize this monument," said 1. JVS spokesperson Jitka Kramářová. Another planned inspection awaits Samson after the tourist season ends.
    Last autumn, the magistrate had the Church of the Holy Family on Senovážné náměstí illuminated, and the year before, the historical sculptures in the center. "By October 28, the lighting of the historical town hall should also be changed. Next year, there should be additional additions for the bridges over the Malše River to the historical center," said Mayor Juraj Thoma.
    The Samson Fountain, a water reservoir with a stone sculpture, was established between 1721 and 1727 as part of the city's water supply system. It was likely inspired by Kohl's Lion Fountain in the second courtyard of Prague Castle. In addition to the central figure of Samson fighting the lion, it includes the figures of four Atlanteans holding a stone shell from the Besednice quarry.
    After the reconstruction, during which it received a new look, lighting, and water distribution, the Samson Fountain was put back into operation in 1999. The water system with jets similar to Prague's Křižík Fountain allows for several spray modes. During festive occasions, the height of the fountain's jet can temporarily reach up to six meters. Together with the Black Tower, the fountain is among the most famous symbols of České Budějovice.
